Regulating Lines

Of this week, the reading assignment was “Regulating Lines” from the Le Corbusier’s book Towards a New Architecture. At the beginning, Le Corbusier defined that regulating line is an inevitable element of architecture. Ordering was occurred by the regulating lines. Therefore, they were necessary parts for designing. The text explained that primitive man used regulating lines without knowing its name in works. Order was occurred by regulating lines in his works. He created  his own units to regulate elements in terms of his own proportion and measures.

In the text, there is also some important information about regulating lines. Thanks to regulating lines, we can create harmonic structures. According to Le Corbusier, if regulating lines are not used to design, structures seem like arbitrary and random. I agree with Le Corbusier about this subject because, of my Arch 101 course, we have study relations between elements and when I make my model, regulating lines are very important parts for me. If I pay attention regulating lines of my model, it seems compatible. Shortly, regulating lines are inevitable elements for architectural designs to create relations between structural elements.

In the text, Le Corbusier also expressed that objects’ beauty come from regulating lines and again I think the same with him about this. Le Corbusier lists off some structures as some examples in the text. These are a primitive temple, Notre-Dame de Paris, the Capitol in Rome, the Petit Trianon and his work in Paris.
